We’re the Best! In Women’s Golf!

The ladies are elated that their Filipino flag golf shirts are a hit.

It’s always nice to see Filipinos do well in sports. Makes me feel better about not having shit-all to be excited about during the Olympics (even Jamaica has a bobsled team).

Imagine my pleasure at hearing that the Filipino tandem of Dorothy Delasin and Jennifer Rosales had won the Women’s World Cup of Golf, dedicating the win to Filipinos all over the world. Finally, we win at a sport that focuses on finesse and a softer touch — by women, no less.

Actually a lot of Filipinos I know play golf. I tried it once and its pretty cool. When I was last in the Philippines, my aunt took me to Tagaytay Highlands which is a beautiful golf club. But Golf has a way of making me feel uneasy because of its upper crust origins. I always wonder if someone in a pink polo is looking at me, thinking that I’m supposed to be the caddy and not playing. I also think of how much land a golf course devours and how golf courses all over the world sometimes displace those who live on the land, not to mention destroy the natural environment.

That’s the downside though, I don’t mean to rain on the parade. Like I said… great to finally excel in a sport where the training does not take place in a bar or an alley. Or a cock fight arena.

Don’t get me wrong — I love me some Manny Pacquiao action and I even get a kick out of watching Efren ‘Bata’ Reyes clean up a pool table (I mean win, not literally clean it), but part of me wonders if we Filipinos can be good at any other sport that doesn’t go hand in hand with gambling or illegal activity. Well, now we have it — GOLF!

Wait a minute, they won a 1.4 million dollar purse? Oh, crap.
